Jowett, Benjamin

Jowett was educated at the University of Oxford. He was ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1845, was appointed Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford in 1855 and in 1870 he was elected Master of Balliol College. He was the author of a liberal commentary on the Epistles of St paul and, even more controversially, a piece on the interpretation of scripture in Essays and Reviews. This was denounced in no uncertain terms by Bishop Samuel wilberforce. After the furore, Jowett turned away from theology and concentrated his attention on the Classics. He took an active part in the affairs of the university and perhaps is most readily remembered as the subject of the undergraduate verse: ‘I am the master of this College, And what I don’t know isn’t knowledge!’
